JULY 2015 : SPAIN : El Camino Del Norte : Day 17 : Ribadesella - Colunga ( 20 kms - 7 hours with stops)

Distance walked so far : 371 kms
Distance to go : 441 kms

A perfect day on the Camino today. Fine day, soft trails, magnificent scenery and a swim to cool off.
Sampled our first ripe (foraged) fig. Delicious!

We set off at 7.30, grabbing a pastry, fresh from the oven, from the panaderia (but no coffee).

We set off uphill, keeping near the coast.

Coffee at the picturesque beach, Playa de la Vega. Colourful decor, Michael Buble playing and sea views.

                   We followed the coastline.

The Picos mountains ahead and a series of long beaches to our right.

The last beach was at La Isla. It was becoming quite hot (28o) so we had a brief rest.

......and swim. Quite chilly but we found a warmer sand pool in which to cool down.

We decided to have lunch in La Isla. Great bar where we could have hamburgers, pizza or local dishes.

We only had another 5 kms before our destination today, Colunga.

A hawk patiently waiting to soar on a cooler breeze.

Colunga is a small service town with all facilities. It does have some interesting historical buildings.

We were given a special pass at the Tourist Office which enabled us to get s flat rate of 20 euros a head at most of the hotels.

We are staying at the Villa de Colunga Hotel. Very convenient ...  no pool but a bath will suffice.

A local market with stallholders dressed in provincial dress and enthusiastically selling food specialities.

Corn bread stuffed with spicy chorizo and bacon or pork.

                                                                 Some local musicians

              Entertainment for the children.

Of course, it was all being set up as we wandered by but the crowds will not start coming until 9.30 or so, when we will be fast asleep.
