SEPTEMBER 2015 : ITALY : Menaggio, Lake Como

Our last day in Menaggio, Lake Como.

The mountainous region of Lake Como.

Menaggio in days gone by. It was important as a refuge for residents of Milan, escaping conflicts, particularly during WW2.

We woke to the sound of heavy rain, zero visibility and the ferries docking immediately out of our window.

Breakfast.

Quiet morning with lunch in the Hotel du Lac cafe.

On Monday I was in a sleeveless top and shorts in very warm conditions but today after the clouds dissipated there was snow on the Alps around us, very early in the season. Reason enough for me to do some urgent shopping - having lost my merino cardigan and with only sandals - so I bought a jacket and shoes to keep me warm!

Impressive dumps of snow nearby.

View towards Varenna across the lake with snow tops mountains.

One of the interesting mansions in Menaggio.

Menaggio street scape.

Homewares autumn window display.

Rugby World Cup - Australia vs Fiji in Cardiff - in a local cafe.

Lights at night.

Bellissimo! My parents visited Lake Como in the 1950s, just as magnificent, a refuge from the many hardships in the years soon after the war. Nick
