DAY 8 : PORTUGAL : LISBON

Weather : sunny, cool : 17o

Out early - washing on line -
definitely a Portuguese artform.

When were in Spain someone recommended
that we go to the Oceanarium if we ever went
to Lisbon. So we did!

The Oceanarium is the largest indoor aquarium in Europe. It is situated in the Parque das Nacoes, which was developed in 1996 for a huge expo to celebrate Vasco da Gama's 500th anniversary of his discovery of India. The precinct has a very similar feel to Homebush Bay. At the Oceanarium there is a temporary exhibition of turtles, rescued and brought  for rehabilitation prior to release. The permanent exhibit is marine life in 4 biospheres - Atlantic, Pacific (Alaska), Tropical (Indian Ocean) and Antarctic. We were there for 3 hours and were mesmerised the whole time.

Clown fish

Huge tanks with authentic environments
Massive gropers

Intriguing creatures

At last we meet some puffins..we've been waiting
to see such wildlife since our walk in England.

We were promised otters in
northern England as well -
what characters they are!

Up close and personal with a rescued turtle

A bit of shopping at Corte Ingles - the biggest
department store in Spain and Portugal.

Walking home we came across an orderly
demonstration outside the Assembleia da
Republica with police spaced evenly up and
 down the main stairs.

 Washing drying in the afternoon
sun.
