DAY 5 : PORTUGAL : LISBON

Weather : sunny, 18o

We left Porto on the 9.30am bus
arrived in Lisbon at 1pm.
Lisbon is a city of 3 million people.
It is the oldest city in Western Europe,
settled by Julius Caesar, ruled by
Germanic tribes from 5th century,
conquered by the Moors in the 8th
century. An interesting city and port,
set on several hills - lots of
exercise this week!

We caught a taxi from the bus station
and he eventually found our B&B in
a tiny alley down by the port. We are
in the neighbourhood of Biarro Alto.
We entered through an archway
into a myriad of courtyards.
Our host was waiting for us in our courtyard
and preceded to give us an introduction to the
city. Four Portuguese young people have
bought 4 properties in the area and developed
a range of good quality accommodation
with so much character.

Our little apartment is off the main courtyard.
We have access to a coffee, tea and drinks
in a common kitchen area, where breakfast
is served.
Quirky furnishings.
We are on the rise from the river - lots
of steps.
From the upper part of the city there are panoramic
views to surrounding precincts of the city, including
to the castle, Castelo de Sao Jorge.
Beautiful parks and cafes abound.
We descended the hill and came to the highly
sophisticated Baixa neighbourhood. This
is Placa de Restauradores.
Then we walked along the Placa de Pedro 1V,
where there is an upmarket shopping area
leading to the port.
Placa do Comco - at the port on the River Tejo

View from one of the B&Bs where we ate dinner

4 course meal with Portuguese wines
First course - mung bean and tomatoes
Second course - portuguese sausage with omelette
Third - pork, spinach and garlic, potato, coriander jus
Fourth course - baked apple with cinnamon rice

Very pleasant and historic looking city..especially when enjoyed without tired feet! The accommodation looks great - no sign of European financial crisis there I hope!
