JULY 2017 : INDIA : DAY 3 : Leh

Nawang had a big day planned for us today..lots of steps to get us in training.

Today we visited the present royal family's palace, Stok Palace and then the impressive Shey Palace and monastery and the Tikse Monastery.Shey Palace housed the Ladakh royal family until the 17th century. We also enjoyed a visit to Shanti Stupa at Chanspa. Our guide for the day was Norbu, an engaging monk and friend of Nawang's.

First Stok Palace and its fascinating museum.

Shey Palace and Monastery

Walking up by the mani wall - always clockwise - chanting Om Mani Padme Hum
(Behold the jewel of the Lotus)

Tikse Monastery - originally established in the 11th century

The inner courtyards

Resting with the locals after a hot tiring (but fascinating) day

Modern Shanti Stupa

The Dalai Lama's compound. He spends about 50 days in Leh each year.

An excellent introduction to the major sites in the area!
