MAY 2023 : SNOWY MOUNTAINS NATIONAL PARK : Charlotte’s Pass to Guthega: 9 kms : recommended 3 hours

A new walk was completed in 2021 near the Kosciusko summit track, from Charlotte’s Pass to Guthega. 9 kms on walkways and paved paths. It has already had rave reviews as it is a safe beginner’s track but with stunning views for the experienced walker.
Despite wet and chilly weather (including possible predicted snow) in recent days we decided to try it out.
A wet drive from Canberra with the last of autumn colours in the Poplars that line the highway.

A night with our friend, Julie, in her lodge on Lake Eucumbene. The water level was considerably higher than our last trip here a year ago.

The walk can be started in either Guthega or Charlotte’s Pass. We chose the most recommended route of Charlotte’s Pass to Guthega.
We did a car shuttle, leaving one car at Guthega.  (In the summer season there is a 5km dirt road open from Guthega to Smiggins, which shortens the drive. In future, the Park Service hope to provide a shuttle bus between the two destination points)

Fortunately today Julie’s brother, Rick, and wife, Ruth, were staying in Jindabyne, so they joined us. Rick is a navigational whizz and knowledgeable about local weather conditions and geographical points, which enriched our walk.
A chilly morning only 7oC - but warmer than predicted. We were all prepared with full wet weather gear, just in case. And indeed, the weather conditions changed in a matter of seconds.
The team at the top of Charlotte ‘s Pass..

A steep walk down a pathed path to the beginning of the track. Fortunately no need to cross the Snowy River today - deep and fast flowing. Views towards Mount Kosciusko.
There are long stretches of metal walkway, which cover all the wet and boggy areas.
From the start spectacular views of the Snowy River, the main feature of the track.

The Snowy River snaking it’s way down the valley.

Carefully laid paths

Half way the mist rolled in with a cold front.
Minimal visibility as it moved through.

A bridge crossing

Last remaining colour as winter draws near.
An interesting spotted grasshopper.
And those amazing multi-coloured snow gums..

Steep descent on a metal stairway into Guthega

A graduated track up the other side, bordered by new landscaping. An impressive exit or entry to the walk.

As we ate lunch, just before the weather closed in, we watched a helicopter dropping white bags of large rocks and gravel to complete the track.

Returning home to Canberra in the late afternoon, feeling relieved and grateful, that we were able to do this on a fine day and with such spectacular uninterrupted views.
Highly recommended.

APRIL 2023 : CANBERRA: Autumn visitors

A perfect week in Canberra - blue skies and such a blast of Autumn colours. We have been in a state of euphoria! It has been such a delight to show Canberra at its best to friends and family.
Lunch at Silo with Teen and Don where we farewelled Don off in a Mississippi Blues tour a treat from and with his three kids.

Neighbours, John and Shelagh, shared their recent Mumbai to Athens cruise details over lunch in our sunny courtyard.

A patchwork exhibition at the Old Bus Markets. My friend, Margaret, one of the contributors. There was a memorial section, which included an animal - inspired quilt by our talented friend, Tricia, who died last July.

APRIL 2023 : SCHOOL HOLIDAYS

Another glorious autumn day in Canberra and a discovery of a fab new cafe on the lake, Walter. A perfect lunch in every way and great to share with two former teaching friends, Rob and Di.
Lovely to have so much in common after 30 years.

Meanwhile in South Africa.. Nick and family are having an amazing holiday with friends, Dave and Jay, and their three kids.

Ash and her four had a happy holiday at the coast. Lots of time on the water. Luckily still warm enough for swimming and surfing.

Dinner with one of Dakota’s friends, Jess, and her lovely family. She and her siblings have adopted us as grandparents. So special sitting around a table,  sharing a meal and conversation with kids as they grow up.

A great end to another wonderful summer
